Hemp Extraction Methods 101: CO2 vs Ethanol vs Lipid Extraction
When you buy a hemp product, you’re not just buying hemp plant material—you’re buying the result of an extraction process. The extraction method dramatically affects product quality, potency, purity, and even which cannabinoids and terpenes make it into your final product.
But what exactly is extraction? And which method should you prioritize when choosing hemp products?
What is Hemp Extraction?
Extraction is the process of separating cannabinoids, terpenes, and other beneficial compounds from the hemp plant material. Think of it like making tea—you’re using a liquid or process to pull the desirable compounds out of the plant while leaving behind the bulk plant matter.
The goal is to create a concentrated product that contains the cannabinoids and terpenes you want, while eliminating unwanted plant material, pesticides, contaminants, heavy metals, and microbial impurities.
Different extraction methods achieve these goals with varying degrees of success.
The Three Major Extraction Methods
1. Supercritical CO2 Extraction
What it is: CO2 (carbon dioxide) is pressurized to a “supercritical” state—where it behaves like both a liquid and a gas. This special state allows CO2 to act as an incredibly efficient solvent.
How it works: CO2 is pressurized to 31.1+ bar pressure and heated above 31.1°C. The supercritical CO2 flows through hemp plant material, cannabinoids and terpenes dissolve into the CO2. Pressure is reduced, causing CO2 to separate from the extracted compounds. What remains is concentrated hemp extract.
Advantages: Extremely precise control over extraction temperature and pressure, can target specific cannabinoids, no toxic solvent residues, preserves terpenes exceptionally well, leaves behind clean plant material, produces high-quality clean extracts.
Disadvantages: Expensive equipment (hundreds of thousands of dollars), high operational costs, requires technical expertise, higher equipment maintenance needs.
Quality Result: Premium. CO2-extracted products typically command higher prices because of superior quality and purity.
2. Ethanol Extraction
What it is: Food-grade or laboratory-grade ethanol (alcohol) is used as a solvent to dissolve cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material.
How it works: Hemp plant material is soaked in ethanol (cold or warm), ethanol dissolves cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant compounds. Plant material is filtered out. Ethanol is evaporated (usually through heat or vacuum). Concentrated hemp extract remains.
Advantages: Lower equipment costs than CO2, faster extraction process, ethanol is food-safe with no toxic residues, can scale production efficiently, creates full-spectrum extracts naturally, suitable for home DIY extraction.
Disadvantages: May extract unwanted plant compounds (chlorophyll, waxes), heat used to evaporate ethanol can damage heat-sensitive terpenes, requires careful handling (ethanol is flammable), final product may need additional refinement.
Quality Result: Good to excellent. Ethanol extracts can be high-quality, especially when combined with additional refinement steps like winterization.
3. Lipid-Based Extraction
What it is: Carrier oils (coconut oil, MCT oil, olive oil) are used to extract cannabinoids. This is the gentlest extraction method.
How it works: Hemp plant material is heated gently with carrier oil. Cannabinoids dissolve into the oil. Plant material is filtered out. The oil now contains concentrated cannabinoids. No evaporation needed (the oil is the final product).
Advantages: Lowest heat and chemical intensity, preserves all terpenes (no heat-driven evaporation), no solvent residues (oil is already intended for consumption), creates full-spectrum extracts, simplest process for small-scale or home production, creates stable long-lasting products.
Disadvantages: Less concentrated final product (cannabinoids are diluted in oil), longer shelf life concerns (oils can oxidize), less efficient extraction (some cannabinoids remain), final product volume is larger.
Quality Result: Excellent for preservation, but lower potency per unit volume.
Full-Spectrum vs Isolate: How Extraction Affects Final Products
Extraction method directly determines whether you get full-spectrum or isolate products.
Full-Spectrum Products: Contain ALL cannabinoids (CBD, THC, CBG, CBN), contain terpenes, contain plant waxes and chlorophyll (unless further refined). Produced by ethanol, lipid, and some CO2 extractions. Benefit from entourage effect. Contain trace THC (under 0.3% in legal hemp).
Isolate Products: Contain only one cannabinoid (usually CBD), terpenes removed, zero THC. Produced by advanced CO2 or ethanol followed by chromatography. Precise dosing, no THC, no flavor. Loss of entourage effect.
Broad-Spectrum Products: Full-spectrum extraction, then THC removed, preserves other cannabinoids and terpenes, zero THC. Best of both worlds with entourage effect without THC.
What to Look for When Buying Hemp Products
When evaluating hemp products, ask about or look for: extraction method (CO2 is premium; ethanol is solid; lipid is quality-preserving), Certificate of Analysis (third-party tested results), residual solvent testing (no toxic solvents), potency claim accuracy (does label match COA?), terpene preservation (full-spectrum should list terpene profiles), and storage information (how has product been stored?).
